Orthotic Services

Orthotics is the design, fabrication, fitting and supervised use of custom-made braces and other devices such as cervical, spinal, knee, and foot orthotics, that provide external support to treat disoders, weakened or injured joints and /or muscle groups. Musculoskeletal disorders are ailments of the back, extremities or joints caused by traumatic injuries, chronic conditions, disease, congenital disorders or resulting from sports or other activities. In some instances, it is necessary to design and fabricate a custom orthosis for a specific need. The orthotist custom fits an off-the-shelf device to the patient's dimensions, or incorporates additional components to achieve the sesired results. An orthosis may be worn temporarily until a weakness or injury is overcome, or on a permanent basis to facilitate impaired function due to a congenital or degenerative condition.

The field of prosthetics deals with the artificial replacement of human body parts. Prosthetic devices are typically used after surgery or amputation to provide mobility or aesthetic appearance, or both. A prosthetist is a person who has been certified to fit prostheses to residual limbs of the upper and lower extremities. The fitting of lower extremity prostheses, for example, involves making a socket that fits the residuum as a first step. The socket is usually manufactured by plastic or carbon fiber infused with acrylic resin or from thermoplastics over a positive model of the residuum. The socket is connected to a foot or ankle assembly and in the case of above knee amputation, an artificial knee. The connecting components are usually an aluminum tube with two part pyramid alignment devises one at each end. Prostheses are aligned with the client walking, while the prosthetist observes the gait and corrects for any deviations from optimized movement when the leg is in the air and for its position at heel strike and toe off.
